The Course To Digital Consciousness™ -- Exposing the Ignorance of the Cyber Bully

From the OCG: This piece serves not only to assist victims of cyber bullying through information and common sense, but to protect potential bullies from altering their own lives from the self-inflicted damage digital harassment can do to their own future.

If you have authored a malicious or hurtful message via digital technology, you are not only ignorant, but frankly...you’re an idiot! If you are offended by this statement, you may have gotten a small taste of your own medicine, but watch out because it is about to get worse.

YOU are the individual at the helm of a digital device when you draft a malicious message, and YOU are purposefully setting out to publicly harm and or humiliate another individual(s) using a global PUBLIC platform. Therefore, YOU are going to have to take the accountability for YOUR actions.

If you have ever been the recipient of a hurtful message via digital technology, today you will be enlightened!

It is incredible how many people in this world will not speak directly to another individual about a problem or issue they have with them, but WILL, behind closed doors, “bravely” confront or "bully" them over the World Wide Web.

Statistics illustrate that a problem exists, and safety tips can be helpful, but at the end of the day, they are ideal only for reference and resource, NOT results. How do we know? Because the incidents of cyber bullying continue to escalate despite the number of stats and safety tips available to our society for over a decade.

Therefore, the OCG is putting ALL past, current and potential cyber bullies or digital "haters" on notice that your malicious digital actions ARE MONITORED FOR EXPLOITATION.

Many of us have very powerful digital tools at our finger tips that provide us with a "window to the world", but what many "digitally armed" individuals do not realize is that "the window works two ways". This stems from a lack of Digital Consciousness™.

If you make it a habit of utilizing digital technology maliciously and irresponsibly, you are essentially placing a digital target on your back, thus exponentially increasing your chances of becoming a victim of unwanted attention and/or being exploited by a C.E.L.

For any individuals who feel they need to hide behind digital technology to harass or be harmful to others, here is your "wake up" call.

Guess what "genius", what you have written using a digital device is Public and Permanent. Think about this for a moment. The individual or group you harassed now has digital proof that YOU are not exactly a “stand up” individual. Quite frankly, the instant your victim (and the world) receive your “note”, is the instant you handed them power over YOU!

You may want to ponder begging for forgiveness from anyone you have sent a negative remark or aimed a malicious action at while cowardly hiding behind (what you may have thought was anonymous) digital technology, because the individual you harassed may now take it upon themselves to save and send that email, picture, video, etc to just about anyone they want, including an employer, a principal, a parent...anyone that means anything to you in this world.

Oh and by the way, the message is not going to go away, so anything your victim has in their possession, they will be able to hold over YOUR head as leverage to control your reputation, scholastic career, employment, and more. What’s more, so too can a C.E.L disrupt your future should they obtain your digital stupidity.

It is Time For Your Wake Up Call

We wonder what your family, friends, employers or future relatives might think when they are presented with the “cowardly hate” you communicated over a digital platform because you did not have the backbone to approach your adversary offline and peaceful. What you write today is [digitally] available forever.

To the recipients of digital harassment:

You now have documentation that your “bully” exists as nothing more than an uninformed individual blinded by ignorance. The moment you receive their message YOU are actually empowered with information to provide an authority figure.

Try and interpret a hate filled message directed at you as comical. While easier said than done, feel free to laugh at your harassers stupidity, and enjoy the fact that, despite what their "words" say, they have just caused themselves potential problems, not you!

REMEMBER: A word or phrase is nothing more than a group of letters, and there is not one word that has ever been able to physically harm anyone else. People cannot physically hurt you with words…only you can hurt yourself by believing it, which would be foolish.

If anyone assumes any sort of privacy when harassing someone via the World Wide Web, here is some eye opening news; 1) there isn’t any privacy online, and 2) a “bully” does not warrant any privacy or protection based on the malicious actions they are employing.

Bullies are going to learn the easy way, or the hard way to stop mis-using digital technology, and it is our hope they will elect to take the easy way before a malicious message comes back to cost them a job,relationship, education, or worse. This is already happening to thousands of “cyber bullies” who have used digital technology to carry out their “attacks” not realizing the long term consequences it could have on their own lives.

Digital Technology has an infinite number of beneficial uses and conveniences, but attempting to publicly (and globally) damage another individual’s reputation or feelings is not one of them.

It is time to start using Digital Tools and Technologies the way they are intended to be used [as powerful tools of convenience] and not for non-sense that would never be tolerated “offline.”
